Stories From The Head

What Sykkel Didn’t Know

Sykkel was dead. Everybody knew this except Sykkel himself. As he made his way from this lif (short for life) to the next, he shouted in a scary, high pitched voice "It's good to be alive". How wrong could he be? Duddo, who had been standing in the shadows, reached out for Sykkel, barely touching his cape. "You're dead, Sykkel". Sykkel laughed and ran as fast as he could (about 1 mph, not very fast). Three months later Duddo caught up with Sykkel (Duddo ran even slower), and, using the fadas-speakers, whispered "You're dead". Sykkel grew four inches by listening to this whisper (as was the custom when a sule-priest used the fadas-speakers), and roared "What did you say?". "You're dead", Duddo replied. "Ha ha ha ha ha hi hi hi hi hi ho ho ho?". It sounded like laughter, but in fact Sykkel was crying. "If I'm dead, what does that make you, Duddo?". Sykkel was in total despair, though it didn't show. Duddo filled his lungs with water and ran away as fast as he could shouting "It makes me HAPPY!". As he felt his name changing from Sykkel to Heppen, Heppen closed his eyes. The next thing he knew...he was still alive...
